"Return to Taur-e-Ndaedelos"
Dakotaraptor steini. An acrylic painting I worked on over the Christmas season of a pair of Dakotaraptors being disturbed during their roost by an interloper.
The initial idea came from a comment someone made a few months ago on a post of mine. I thought it was a good idea and began the drawing phase around my finals week last fall. I looked to some old Tolkien art of Mirkwood for some inspiration. I went for a more desaturated look for the background than I usually do for most of my spooky forest paintings.
I wanted to add a skull of some sort to add to the unsettling atmosphere and also as a scale reference for the Dakotaraptors, so I went with a juvenile Triceratops skull. This was the first painting where I tried something I was taught in art school years ago; mixing my own black paint instead of using the pre-mixed black from the tube. It does really help create a more vivid black compared to the pre-mixed stuff.
Completed on the 1st of January 2018.
Done using acrylics, color pencils and ink.
